Barbara Sellers

Barbara Anne Brett Sellers of 1385 Ringgold Road, Ringgold, VA 24586 died Monday, November 17, 2008 at the age of 79 years old. She was born September 13, 1929 in Portsmouth, VA to Herbert James Brett and Bessie Mae Boylan Brett, who predeceased her. Mrs. Sellers was first married to Woody Phelps and they had one daughter, Gypsy.L. Phelps. On March 17, 1955 she married Hubert Cyril Sellers, Sr. in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. They were married for over 53 years. Mr. Sellers died July 27, 2008. She worked for C & P Telephone Company for 37 years. After retirement, she worked part-time as Secretary at Ringgold Baptist Church, where she was a member. She was active in the "Joy Club" for Senior Citizens and in her "Eva Walton Sunday School Class". She also worked for many years at the Ringgold Voting Precinct. Mrs. Sellers was known locally for her racing in the "Powder Puff" Derby's at the original "Danville Speedway", where her husband, Hubert Sellers, was Co-Founder. Mrs. Sellers battled cancer heroically for the last 22 years. She was truly an inspiration to those who knew her. She was always happy and never complained about her illness. Many friends called her the "Energizer Bunny" because she kept going and going. She set an example for others to never give up and to enjoy life to the fullest. Three daughters and one son survive Mrs. Sellers. They are Gypsy L. Phelps, Bert and Mary Edna Sellers, Cyril Anne Sellers, and Ginger Sue Sellers. Survivors include three grandchildren, Brett (Susan) Phelps, H. C. (Monica) Sellers III, and Peyton Sellers. Also, she had four great-grandchildren, Cody Phelps, Macy Phelps, Brittany Sellers and Kristen Sellers. Her sister, Lamar Earp, formerly of South Boston also survives her along with numerous nieces and nephews. Blake Walker, Judy Barham and Wilma and Clarence Newton were special friends to "GG", as many called her. Her pets, "Peanut" and "Taz" will also miss "GG". We would like to recognize the wonderful caregivers, who helped with our Mother and Father during their last year. Peggy Anderson, Barbara Barber, Tina Burdette, Emma Davis and Helen Poole were a true blessing to our family for the care and love that they showed all our family. God blessed us with their presence and we thank them so much! A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at Ringgold Baptist Church. Visitation with the family will follow immediately in the Family Life Center at the church until 7:30 pm. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Peyton Sellers Championship Award at Danville Community College Foundation - Attention: Buddy Rawley at 1008 South Main Street, Danville, VA 24541 or to the Ringgold Volunteer Fire Dept. at P. O. Box 10, Ringgold, VA 24586. Donations may also be made to the Animal Welfare League of Pittsylvania at P. O. Box 936, Chatham, VA 24531.
