Betty McLaughlin

Betty Hardy McLaughlin, age 99, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Roman Eagle Rehab and Nursing Home. Betty had lived an active life, living at Hilltop Gardens until a decline in health in the last 4 months. She worked at Belk Leggett Department Store for most of her life, retiring in 1986. Betty was born June 26, 1924 on a farm in Keeling, Virginia, the daughter of the late Vester and Mattie Hardy. The last surviving sibling, she was predeceased by sisters Lettie (Sissy) Turner, Lorena Adams and Audrey Walker and brothers Earl Walton, Pete Walton, Alton Hardy and Dave Hardy. She was also predeceased by her husband Daniel McLaughlin who she married on December 27, 1958. She is survived by her son, Bruce Burnette and his wife Pat and by her daughter Ellen Boyd and her husband Butch. Also survived by grandchildren Brian Hamilton (Donna), Brent Burnette (Lindsey) and Rachel Boyd (Patrick) and great-grandchildren Brittany (Thomas), Evelyn, Violet, Jeremy & Sarah and also great-great grandchildren. Family for Betty was not just determined by blood, but also by those she shared laughter and tears. Because of that, she is also survived by her lifelong friend Dorothy Milam, her neighbor Rhonda White, friends Virginia Sanchez and Debbie Smith, Aurelia from Belks and all of the wonderful congregation of Kentuck Presbyterian Church. She is also survived by the members of the Burnette family, who were always her family. Thanks to her friends & neighbors at Hilltop Gardens, especially Diane Owen. Thanks to her special niece, Gay Boswell for sharing memories and to her nephew Bobby Walker for always being just a phone call away to help. Thanks to everyone at Roman Eagle that took such great care of her in the East Wing, in Rehab and the office. A special thank you to all the employees there that stopped her in the hallway to compliment her on her new haircut and told her she looked pretty. That was a kindness that meant so much to her. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, officiated by Rev. David Smith. There will be a visitation from 2:00 P.M. until the start of the service at 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is respectfully serving the family.
