Charlotte Wall Powell

Mrs. Charlotte W. Powell, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 29, 2016. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held at Vandola Baptist Church on Thursday, June 2 at 4:00 PM with Dr. Scott Bortz officiating. Burial will follow Danville Memorial Gardens. The receiving of family and friends will be held at Vandola Baptist Church prior to the funeral services beginning at 2:30 PM. Mrs. Powell was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on October 11, 1922 to P.O. Wall and Marjorie Moss Wall, who predeceased her. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Luther T. Powell, in January of 2006. Brothers Cornelius C. Wall and Donald O. Wall; sister Frances W. Roberts; and grandson David Finch also predeceased her. Mrs. Powell is survived by sisters Wanda W. Bass, Peggy W. Dickerson and husband Clyde, Earlene W. Vogt and husband Don; two children, Karen Anderson and husband Bill, Chip Powell and wife Mary; grandchildren Tommy Owen, Luke Powell, Melisa Lyles and husband Graham, Madeline Powell and Erin Finch; great-grandchildren Alex Powell, Allye Powell, Riley Powell, Carter Lyles and Molly Lyles, as well as numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Powell worked as an office clerk at Smith-Douglas Company and retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company. She was a faithful member of Vandola Baptist Church for 81 years, where she played the piano and organ for many years, sang in the choir, and participated in many ministries of the church such as the Fellowship Class, WMU and the Ellen Moore/Pearl Davis Circle. Mrs. Powell was a greatly beloved mother and grandmother and cherished as our “Mema.” She will be remembered as a thoughtful and caring friend to many, always sending cards, visiting and taking food to family, friends and others in her church and community. She was a faithful servant of her Lord, always seeking to help others grow their salvation. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Vandola Baptist Church, 1950 Vandola Church Road, Danville, Virginia, 24541 or Bachelors Hall Vol. Fire Dept., 1301 Berry Hill Rd, Danville, VA 24541. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Powell family.
