Jason Wiles Tate Sr.

Jason Wiles Tate, Sr., 80, husband of Shelby Stanfield Tate, of Ringgold, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023 after a courageous fight that began in July of 2022. In addition to his mission work with his church, Jason loved gardening, world traveling, his furry friend, Roxie, reading mysteries, playing computer games, swimming, grilling, savoring a meal, family beach trips, and driving to destinations-not-determined with Shelby. Born on July 22, 1942, he was a son of the late Edward Mason Tate, Sr. and Virginia Frances Wiles Tate. Jason was employed for 45 years by Dibrell Brothers, later Dimon, as a tobacconist. Upon his retirement, he was Vice President, Plant Operations. In retirement, he worked for the Danville Braves organization for a few years in everything from ticket sales to serving as an usher. Jason was a lifelong and active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as a certified lay speaker, choir member, trustee chair, Virginia Annual Conference delegate, Sunday School teacher, administrative board chair, United Methodist Men’s Treasurer, Community Lenten Service Coordinator, and longtime stew master. In addition to his wife of nearly 63 years, he is survived by two sons, Jason Wiles Tate, Jr. (Kimber); Jody Edward Tate (Teresa); one daughter, Stacye Tate Cassidy; six grandchildren, Joshua Tate, Kelsey Hartman (Cody); Justin Tate, Kyrstin Tate, Jaydin Tate, and Drake Cassidy; one great-grandchild on-the-way (Baby Hartman); a brother, Edward Mason Tate, Jr., and a sister, Diane Smithey (Tony). Jason was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Mary Beth Tate. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 29, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. At all other times, the family will be at the residence, 1661 Little Creek Road, Ringgold. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Ryan S. Ware officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church or Ringgold Volunteer Fire Department.
