John Benjamin "Ben" Lewis

John Benjamin “Ben” Lewis was born on April 22, 1981 in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of Jack Kayle Lewis and Barbara Holland Lewis. Growing up in Amherst County, Ben loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter in his youth. He played Dixie Youth baseball in Madison Heights and played football at Monelison Middle School and Amherst High School. Ben also loved the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Steelers. Ben was a graduate of Amherst County High School, Longwood College (Class of 2002), and received his Juris Doctorate in 2009 from Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida. Ben enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves in 1998 and served until 2006. He was called to active duty in 2004 and deployed to Iraq with Charlie Company, Combat Engineers from Lynchburg and was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon as well as promoted to Sergeant while overseas. He served with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office from 2002 until 2006, as a Field Deputy, School Resource Officer and Investigator to Blue Ridge Thunder. Tragically, the effects of his service left him with many scars, as he suffered from both Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a Traumatic Brain Injury. Despite many programs and much professional assistance, he lost his battle on June 8, 2023. The greatest joy in his life came from his three children, Charlotte Paige Lewis, Jackson Bennett Lewis and Holland Angeline Lewis who survive him along with his parents. Ben was blessed by the friendships of those who knew him growing up, his coworkers in Law Enforcement and especially those fellow Marines who proudly served their Nation with him. He also had the gift of one who never gave up on him and was always there when he needed her support, right up to his last days. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel. A memorial service will follow visitation at 2:00 p.m. with Military Rites being rendered by the United States Marine Honor Guard as well as Masonic Rites.
