Julia Whitley

Julia Thomas Whitley, 91, of 152 Starling Avenue, Danville, VA died on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital after being in declining health for the past several years and hospitalized for one day. Mrs. Whitley was born in Bath County, VA on April 25, 1918 a daughter to the John Wesley Thomas and Leila Shackelford Thomas. She had lived most of her life in the Glenwood Community of Pittsylvania County and Danville. Mrs. Whitley had worked as a homemaker and as a weaver for the former Dan River Mills Inc. Riverside Division, # 2 weave room until her retirement after 45 years of service. Mrs. Whitley was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church and a member of the Sunshine Sunday School Class. She was very active in riding and showing her horses and serving as the secretary for the Pittsylvania County Saddle Club for many years. On June 27, 1935 she married the late Henry Craven Whitley who died on February 19, 1990. Mrs. Whitley is survived by four daughters Janet W. Hazelwood & husband Jim of Sutherlin, VA, Dianne W. Gilbert & husband John of Ringgold, VA, Joyce W. Layman & husband Bob of Fincastle, VA & Peggy W. Hudson & husband Charles of Whitsett, NC, one brother John W. Thomas, Jr., two sisters Violet W. Howdershelt & Lillian T. Sullivan all of Fredericksburg, VA, ten grandchildren Karen Lytle, John Gilbert Jr., Julie G. Bennett, Lori H. Ingram, Thomas C. Hazelwood, Michael A. Hazelwood, Jason V. Hazelwood, Chris Moore, Christie H. Brown & Angelia H. Clapp, 16 great grandchildren & 3 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one sister Elizabeth T. Vipperman, one step daughter Dovey J. Whitley and one step son Everett Lee Whitley. Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church by the Reverend Averette Witcher. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church Friday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times they will be at the residence 152 Starling Avenue in Glenwood. The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church, 125 Starling Avenue, Danville, VA 24540.
