Leonard Alan Powell

Leonard Alan Powell, 72, of Danville, VA went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 25, 2025 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. Leonard was born in Danville, VA on October 3, 1953, a son of the late Leonard Acie Powell and Nellie Mae Payne Powell Winstead. He was the owner and manager of Sam’s Corner #2 Convenience Store in Pelham, North Carolina. Leonard was a devoted member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, he was actively involved in many areas of church life. He helped organize and participate in charter bus trips, faithfully drove the church bus to transport members to and from services, and served as a deacon. He was also a dedicated member of the scholarship committee and sang in the church choir, always giving his time and talents in service to others. He was also a very active member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 325, where he generously gave his time and support. He assisted with the SAL Child Welfare Foundation, helping improve the lives of children in need. He had a deep love for racing, especially NASCAR, and enjoyed following the sport closely. Known as an all-around helper, he lived by his favorite saying, “What can I do to help?”—a phrase that truly reflected his caring and giving spirit. In addition to his parents, Leonard was predeceased by his step-father, Basil Winstead; brothers, Kenneth Powell and Garnett Powell; sister-in-law, Beulah Powell. Survivors include, his brothers, Jimmy Powell and Tommy Powell (Linda); sisters-in-law, Bettie Powell and Joyce Powell; his significant other, which he called his Angel, Annie Sue McGee; step sister, Millicent Warren; numerous, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; extended family, church family, neighbors and friends. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, December 28, 2025 at 3:00 P.M. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Reverend Bob Yeaman officiating. Interment will follow the service in Pelham United Methodist Church Cemetery, 594 Red Marshall Road, Pelham, NC 27311. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church on Sunday from 1:00 P.M. to 2:45 P.M. In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial donations be made to your favorite charity or to the Pelham United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund at 594 Red Marshall Road, Pelham, NC 27311.
