Malcolm Hardy

Malcolm J. Â?MacÂ? Hardy, 85, of 4100 Westover Drive died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. He was born July 5, 1924 in the Stony Mill community of Pittsylvania County the son of Willard Hardy and Pauline Burton Hardy. Mr. Hardy lived his entire life in Danville and the Westover Hills community and served his country in the Navy during World War II, serving on the USS Fremont (APA-44) in the South Pacific. He worked in the petroleum industry for over 40 years and was owner and operator of Mac Hardy Oil Company until his retirement. After retirement he enjoyed traveling, gardening, woodworking and carrying his flowers and food to the shut-ins. Mr. Hardy enjoyed fellowship with all and never met a stranger. Mr. Hardy was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church where he was active with the Fellowship Sunday school class. He was a member of the Westover Sertoma Club and a member of the USS Fremont (APA-44) Reunion Association. On July 2, 1949 he was married to the former Nancy Smith, she preceded him in death on September 13, 1993. He was also predeceased by three sisters, Mildred Hardy Blair, Hunter Hardy Burton and Mary Hardy McAllister and two brothers, Russell Hardy and Burton Hardy. He is survived by a daughter, Dianne Hardy Wallace and her husband, Robert of Pulaski; two sons, Malcolm Dwayne Hardy and his wife, Terry of Fairfax and Gerald Smith Hardy of Newport News; a sister, Janie Hardy Green and brother-in-law, Allen McAllister both of Danville; three grandchildren, Whitney Erin Voorhees, Robert Malcolm Wallace and Shannon Hardy and two great-grandchildren, Lily Anne Voorhees and Benjamin Henry Voorhees and a life-long friend, Ruby Dyer Pace and her family. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 2:00 pm from the Fairview United Methodist Church by the Reverend Bob Gochenour and the Reverend Linwood Daniel. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 7:00 Â? 8:30 pm and other times at the residence. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Hardy family.
