Marion B. Atwater

Marion B. Atwater of Danville’s Holiday Village passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past year. She was born in Danville, VA, on January 23, 1926 to the late Erna Davis Bray and Howard Fletcher Bray. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Atwater was predeceased by her brother, Howard F. Bray, Jr. and one sister, Constance Reed, of Sun Lakes, AZ. She was married to the late William “Bill” Atwater and was predeceased by two step-daughters, Dixie Atwater and Billie Atwater. Survivors include her twin sister, Mirene B. Merricks, of Danville; one niece, Cindy Merricks, also of Danville; and nephew, Rick Vier, of Phoenix, AZ, who visited her days before her death. She is also survived by her step-son, W. Ben Atwater, Jr. and wife Donna, of Siler City, NC, and three step-grandchildren, Ryan Boone, Molly Boone, and Will Atwater. A special mention must be made of her devoted friend and diligent caregiver, Goldie Barbour. Mrs. Atwater grew up in Danville where she attended Danville Public Schools. Before her marriage to Bill Atwater she worked at Dan River’s Hylton Hall. After her marriage they moved to and resided at Emerald Isle, NC, for twenty years, where she enjoyed the beach, golf, and entertainment. Upon her return to Danville, Marion became an avid gardener taking pride in her yard and flower beds, particularly her favorite yellow flowers and red geraniums. Throughout her life she shared the special love of her devoted pet Chihuahuas. Mrs. Atwater was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church which she attended regularly until prohibited by her decline in health. She considered her Pastor, Bob Yeaman and her church friends and family an integral part of her life. The family would like to express its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to those friends and neighbors at Holiday Village who remembered Marion with their cards, prayers, and visits. We would also like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of DRMC’s ICU and 6th floor for their excellent attention and care. A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Robert “Bob” Yeaman officiating. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is respectfully serving the Atwater family.
