Pete Harry Sakellaris

Pete Harry Sakellaris, peacefully passed on January 19, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. Pete was born on March 2, 1926, the son of Harry K. Sakellaris and Stella Gianopoulos Sakellaris. He was also predeceased by his grandparents, Bertha and Socrates Gianopoulos. Pete married Sylvia Anne Gentry on April 25, 1954, and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. The couple had five children, Harry P. Sakellaris, of Danville, VA; Joanne S. Thompson (Willy), of Rock Hill, SC; Gregory J. Sakellaris, of Danville, VA; Laura S. Bayes (Mike), of Pittsylvania County, VA; and Allison S. Wann (Don Clemmons), of Greensboro, NC, and son-in-law, Hobie Wann, of South Boston, VA. Pete had nine grandchildren, Kasey S. Engel (Joseph), Emily B. Sakellaris (Jeffrey), Will W. Thompson, Rylee T. Thompson, Victoria A. Thompson, Hunter J. Squier (Elizabeth), Eric B. Squier, Courtney W. Foster (Jonathan), and Cayla Wann (Mikey Wood). Pete had five great-grandchildren, Delanie Engel, Addison Foster, Aiden Foster, Avery Foster, and Chloe Wood. Pete was predeceased by three brothers, Charlie H. Sakellaris, Sam H. Sakellaris (Mary Ethel), and Leo H. Sakellaris (Annie). Pete is survived by a brother, Chris H. Sakellaris (Ardele), and a sister, Anne S. Kazazes (Jimmy). Pete was also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Pete proudly served his country in the Army infantry in World War II. Pete served as a scout in Patton’s Third Army, was wounded in the neck by a German machine gun, and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Pete co-owned and operated the New Deal Cafe on Craghead Street, Danville, VA, was the assistant manager of the Charcoal House Restaurant, the assistant manager of the Plaza Restaurant, and, along with his wife, Sylvia, owned and operated the Luncheonette Restaurant on North Main Street, Danville, VA, until his retirement in 1990. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2017, at Woodberry Hills Baptist Church, 617 Audubon Drive, Danville, VA. The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. at the church, followed by a graveside service at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a local charity of the donor’s choice. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is serving the Sakellaris family.
