Rae Mays

Rae Mays passed away on November 28, 2010 at Adams Farm Living and Rehabilitation Center in Jamestown, NC. She had been in declining health for several years. Born Virginia LaRae Owen in Danville, VA on July 16, 1928, she was the daughter of the late James Wiley Owen and Pearl Perkins Owen. She was a graduate of Danville Evening High School and worked for a number of years as a secretary for United Bonding Company and later as a retail clerk at Brown?s Jewelry. She was a former member Old Dominion Chapter ABWA, Woodberry Hills Baptist Church, and Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, all in Danville, VA. She moved to Greensboro in 1999 and was a member of Lawndale Baptist Church. On November 4, 1944 she married Robert Crowell Kenerley, who passed away on September 1, 1967. She later married Wade Hampton Mays, who died on August 14, 1984. Mama enjoyed being a wife, mother, and grandmother; she was an excellent cook of southern foods, loved playing Bingo on her computer, liked gardening, and crocheted many keepsakes for her family. She is survived by son, David Ray Kenerley (Britta), grandson, Cary Kenerley, of O?Fallon, IL, granddaughter, Kristin Berglund, of San Francisco, CA; daughter, Kathy Kenerley Murphy (Brian) and grandson, Tim Murphy, of Greensboro; step-son, Neil H. Mays (Elaine) of Yorktown, VA, their children, Suzanne Williams, Vicky Wheeler, and Connie Chester, their grandchildren, Katie, Kyle, Sarah, Scott, Lexie, and Ryan; sister, Carolyn O. Mills, of Danville, VA, and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside rites will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. in Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Frederick Vicks officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10:00 ? 11:00 a.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel, 703 N. Main St., Danville, VA, and at other times will be at the home of Kathy and Brian Murphy, 6504 Birkdale Drive, Greensboro, NC 27410. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice and Pallative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave, Greensboro, NC 27405. Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel is serving the Mays family.
