Rev. Bob James Thorne

Robert James Thorne, 77, of Danville, VA passed away on Monday, June 8, 2020, surrounded by his family and friends. Bob was born on July 11, 1942 to the late James W. Thorne and Hattie Chambers Thorne of Tangier, VA. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Thorne; sister, Isabelle Parks; brother, Donald Thorne; niece, Rose Parks; and nephews, Jeff Parks, Hughie Thorne, and Mike Thorne. Bob graduated from Tangier High School. He married the love of his life Frances P. Thorne; they were married for 50 years. They are the parents of Robert Jeffery Thorne (Lyndsay), Joshua David Thorne (Shauna). He has a brother, Jack Thorne; sisters, Ginny Marshall, Grace Pruitt, Alice Crockett; and a host of nieces and nephews. Bob was a waterman for several years and the Mayor of Tangier for 9 years. He was involved in getting the first phase of the seawall on the west side of the island and was also involved in the recreation center. He served on the board of Aviation for Virginia and for the Marine Resource Commission. While being an active member of Swain Methodist Church he served on many committees, then the Lord called on him to join the ministry in which he served from 1982 to 2019. He was dedicated to doing the Lord’s work and served several churches and was blessed by all. Bob loved his family, especially his grandson, Wesley Paul Thorne and granddaughter, Lindsey Michelle Thorne. He liked to go fishing, crabbing and love to tell funny stories, traveling and the love he lived shined out to the people he came to know. He will truly be missed. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, June 12, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend Intek Oh, the Reverend Edward Pruitt and the Reverend Johnny Thorne officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence, 2357 Inman Rd, Danville, VA 24541 on Thursday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial donations be made to Swain United Methodist Church, Tangier, VA or to Liberty Hospice.
