Sandra Walker Bowen

Sandra Walker Bowen, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, of 425 Brooke Drive, Danville, VA went home to be with the Lord on December 7, 2013 after being in declining health for the past one year. Sandra was born into this world, on September 2, 1947 a daughter of the late Charles W. Walker and Mona Gibson Walker. She had lived all of her life in the Mountain Hill Community of Pittsylvania County and Danville, VA. Sandra was a graduate of Dan River High School, Class of 1965. She worked for the Virginia A.B.C. Board as manager of the Union Street Store with 29 years of service. Sandra was a dedicated, long time and very proud member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church where she actively participated in numerous functions and capacities. She was responsible for decorating the church for special occasions and holidays. Sandra loved her plants and flowers and enjoyed spending time making her yard beautiful. She was a former master gardener. On June 11, 1966 she married the late Dempse Harrison Bowen who predeceased her on August 31, 2012. Sandra is survived by one son Jeffrey H. Bowen of Danville, VA, one daughter Kimberly B. Adkerson and husband Scott of Ringgold, VA, three grandchildren, the highlights of her life, Dustin Marshall, Grant Bowen & Drew Marshall. She was also survived by two very special friends, Mrs. Peggy Furr and Mrs. Cindy Shelton, as well as many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years, Dempse H. Bowen, and four sisters Joyce W. Bailey, Nancy W. Deaver, Norma W. Snead & Brenda W. Andrews. The Funeral Services and celebration of her life will be conducted on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. from the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church pastored by the Reverend Fredrick Vicks. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday 5:30-7:00 P.M. at the church and at other times they will be at the residence, 425 Brooke Circle, Danville, VA 24540. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to God’s Pit Crew, located at 2499 North Main St. Danville, Va., or the Wounded Warrior Project c/o VFW Bollard Pruitt Post 647, located at 275 VFW Drive, Danville.
