Sherman Leslie Kendrick

Sherman Leslie Kendrick, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025. Born in Callands, Virginia, to Elvin and Gladys Lockemy Kendrick, Sherman was preceded in death by his parents as well as siblings Norman Kendrick, Helen Moschler, and Arlon Lee Kendrick. Sherman is survived by his loving wife, Norma Clay Kendrick, whom he married on November 14, 1964. Just this past November, they celebrated their 62nd anniversary. Though their life together was not always easy and they faced many challenges, their love endured all hardships. They always found their way back to each other and kept their family strong and united, even when times got tough—something increasingly rare today. In addition to his wife, Sherman is survived by his three adoring children: Connie Kendrick Wade, Shannon Leslie Kendrick, and his spouse, Nenen Kendrick, and Cassandra Kendrick Elder and her spouse, Tommy Elder. He leaves behind his greatest joy, his six grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as their “Papa”: Wesley Elder and his wife, Amaris Kirby, Savannah Elder Newsome and her husband, Jourdan Newsome, Cassey Wade Peterson and her spouse, Aaron, Jordan Alexander Wade, Hannah Elder Downey and her husband, Blake Downey and Trinity Alexis Kendrick. He also cherished his great-grandchild, Harrison Gregory Newsome, and had looked forward to another great- grandchild on the way. Sherman was blessed with a vast extended family. On the Kendrick side he is survived by his niece and nephews Grace Scheeser and her husband Gary, Stanley Moschler and his wife Juliet, Paul Moschler and his wife Sherry On his wife's side of the family he has too many nieces and nephews to name individually. He held dear his in laws particularly Verna Conner who held his hand as he crossed over, Ethel Bea Moore, Elaine McGuire, Ramona and Floyd Elliott. It cannot go without recognizing his special friends and neighbors Jerry and Diane Dudley who were as close as any family could be. Sherman was an electrician by trade and worked for the City of Danville Utilities Department for 34 years, retiring in 2006 as a foreman of a line crew. In those 34 years of service, one of the most notable points of pride was that none of the men under his supervision were ever seriously injured on the job. He was truly a renaissance man in the sense of his self-taught abilities. Despite having only a sixth or seventh grade education, Sherman taught himself to read at a high level and mastered a wide range of skills. He could handle carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and mechanics. As a family story goes, he once took an old gas-powered washing machine motor and attached it to a wagon, riding it around the yard for fun. There was truly nothing he couldn’t do with his hands In his leisure time, Sherman found joy in a wide range of activities. He was an excellent fisherman who won many tournaments, His love of carpentry and working with wood extended into gardening and caring for his yard, going on cruises but his greatest passion in recent years was flying large-scale model airplanes. He also had a deep love of music and was fascinated by how the world worked, often watching documentaries and eagerly learning something new. Ever inquisitive, Sherman never stopped asking questions. He loved to meet new people, share stories, and teach others how things worked. Most of all, he loved his family immensely. A man of deep integrity, Sherman valued honesty above all else. Of all the qualities he admired in others, honesty was the one he cherished most. He was the person everyone called when they needed help or had a question, especially about fixing things or household issues, and he always seemed to have an answer and a helping hand. In his later years, Sherman was a man of faith who chose to follow Jesus. He understood that faith was more than just attending church out of obligation; it was about having a personal relationship with the Lord. Sherman professed his faith sincerely and lived his life with that belief deep in his heart. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 1:30 P.M. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with interment following in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 13, 2025 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.
