William F. Dyer

William F. “Bill” Dyer passed away July 5th, 2022, after a lengthy illness. He was 92. Bill was born on December 17. 1929 in Danville, VA to the late William D. and Grovene F. Dyer. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Faye Thompson Dyer, his daughter, Gail Dyer Moore (Wally), of Wesley Chapel, NC and grandson, Graham H. Moore of Williston, VT. Bill was predeceased by daughter, Susan Carol Dyer and sister, Mildred D. Moore. Outside of his family, Bill's life centered around baseball and automobile racing. He was a pitcher on his high school team. After graduating high school, Bill joined the U.S. Air Force, serving his country from 1948 to 1952. He was based in Germany, Alaska and Montana and continued his love of playing baseball. He helped lead the Great Falls Air Force Base Airlifters to the Montana State Championship in 1950. He was the winning pitcher in both the Semi-Final and Championship Games, both games being played on the same day. Following the Championship Game, he was offered a contract to play for the Chicago Cubs, which he did not pursue. He received his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force in 1952. After leaving the Air Force, Bill worked for the Danville Register and Bee for 25 years. While working at the newspaper, he started writing his syndicated column known as "Pit Stop". The column was "the" source for race fans for over 40 years and was featured in 8 area newspapers. Leaving his job with the newspaper as Circulation Manager allowed Bill to pursue his lifelong passion for automobile racing. He worked as general manager, promoter and public relations director for both South Boston Speedway and Orange County Speedway for over 25 years. Bill was honored by South Boston Speedway, naming their press box the "Bill Dyer Press Box". Bill was elected to the Virginia Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2018, the first journalist to receive this honor. He was the public relations representative for 2 seasons for two-time NASCAR Busch Champion Tommy Ellis. A lifelong member of the National Motorsports Press Association, Bill was also a member of the nation-wide Racing Panel of Experts. After retirement, he continued to follow NASCAR, hang out with his Coffee "Klatch", spend some time on the golf course, work on his extensive model train set and share his great sense of humor with all that crossed his path. Bill attended Lighthouse Bible Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 8, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. C. Lee Rigsby, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00-7:30 PM at the funeral home and at the residence at other times. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations can be directed to a charity of your choice. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Dyer family.
