Claude Gammon

Claude Eldridge Gammon, Jr., 62, of Ruffin, North Carolina passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009 at his residence. Claude was born on October 3, 1946 in Leakesville, North Carolina to the late Claude Eldridge Gammon, Sr. and Dorothy Powell Gammon. He had spent most of his life in the Danville and surrounding areas. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967 as a military police officer. He graduated from the former Ruffin High School in 1964 and then attended Danville Community College. Claude had been employed by Dan River Inc. for twenty years as a supervisor before the former Riverside Division closed. He also worked at the Burlington Industry Reidsville Plant until the plant closed. He had worked for Southwestern General Life and Peoples Security as a sales manager. Before his retirement he worked with Essel Propack America. He attended the Happy Home Christian Church and the Brosville United Methodist Church. On March 12, 1966 he married Bernice Calvert Gammon. Survivors in addition to his wife and mother both of Ruffin N.C. include, a son Gregory C. (Greg) Gammon and wife Melissa of Danville; a daughter Jill Gammon Carrillo and husband Rene of Richmond; two sisters, Susan G. Thurman of Ruffin N.C. and Diane G. Hooker and husband Tommy of Corbin, K.Y.; three grandsons, Zachary Gammon, Raenen Carrillo, and Sevilen Carrillo. He was predeceased in death by two brothers David A. Gammon and Ted M. Gammon. A Memorial service will be conducted on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Reverend Jeff Harlow and the Reverend Bruce McBride. Military Honors will be presented by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard. Interment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends on Monday before the service from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. The family suggest that memorial contributions to the Brosville Fire and Rescue Building Fund or the Brosville United Methodist building fund or Happy Home Christian Building fund or the charity of your choice.
