Edwin McClanahan

On Thursday morning, July 29, 2010, Edwin Frank McClanahan, passed away peacefully at his home. He had fought a brave battle against cancer for the past thirteen years and was a dialysis patient for four years. In his last weeks he displayed personal courage and GodÂ?s great grace. Born May 12, 1936, he was the son of the late George Thomas McClanahan, Sr., and Ila Pruitt McClanahan. His loving stepmother was the late Ella Mayhew Pennington McClanahan. Ed proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1957, attaining the rank of Airman Second Class. During his tour of active military duty, he spent two years in Panama. On November 26, 1958, Edwin married Ramona P. McClanahan, who survives of the residence. Until retirement in 1991, he was employed at Corning Glass Works for thirty years, in the Forming Department. He was hired in the initial group when Corning opened its new plant in Danville. Ed was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 647, where he has served as Quartermaster. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 1097. An avid outdoorsman, his hobbies were deer hunting, bass fishing, and deep-sea fishing. He was always in pursuit of a trophy rack and received numerous citations for various sporting events. Survivors include his wife, Mona; one daughter, Sandra M. Davis, of Danville; one son, Edwin Glenn McClanahan, of Danville; two granddaughters, Crystal M. Neal, of Ringgold, and Lindsay D. Moorefield, of Martinsville; one grandson, Daniel G. McClanahan, of Lynchburg; one great-granddaughter, Hannah M. Neal; and one great grandson, Landon James Hardy. He is also survived by one sister, Virginia M. Hughes; one brother, George T. McClanahan, Jr.; one half sister, E. Carole McClanahan; and one step brother, Richard D. Pennington, all of Danville. He was predeceased by one sister, Marion M. Wade; and one step brother, James R. Â?J.R.Â? Pennington. The family is grateful to his caregivers of the Urologic Center-Fresenius Medical Services of Danville. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that memorial donations be sent to Danville Cancer Association, 2323 Riverside Drive, Suite J, Danville, VA 24541. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Reverend Charles Wickham officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and at other times the family will be at the residence.
