James William Gilbert

James William Gilbert, 57, of 436 Church Lane, Sutherlin, VA, died, Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at his residence after a heroic eight month battle with cancer. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me-the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day” Jim is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Sharon Oakley Gilbert; three daughters, Jamie G. Yancey (Vince), Meagan G. Burch (Chris), and Melanie Gilbert, all of Sutherlin, VA; a brother, Lawrence E. Gilbert, Jr. (Frankie); sisters, Judy Adams, Joyce Collie (Tommy), and Jayne Inman; grandsons, Tanner Yancey and Gavin Burch; and many nieces and nephews. Born June 24, 1955, in Danville, VA he was a son of the late Lawrence and Julia Gilbert. He graduated from Dan River High School and lived the majority of his life in the Laurel Grove Community of Pittsylvania County. Jim began farming in his early twenties and found a passion for producing a quality product. He was an active member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors and was known as an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved sports and spent many years coaching softball and serving as a mentor both on and off the field. Now deeply missed, he will be remembered not just for his patience, dry wit, charm, and friendliness, which forged and strengthened many relationships, but his calm, laid back approach to life and the way he brought out the best in a person. The family will always be grateful to Dr. Brotherton, of Danville, and his compassionate nurse Lauren Miller, for the excellent care they provided. The family is also grateful for the unfailing support of the many faithful friends and family members. The countless prayers and acts of love and kindness will never be forgotten. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 4:00 P.M. from Laurel Grove Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jason Arthur and the Rev. Charlie Ryan. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Church and at the residence at other times. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to the Danville Cancer Society or to the Laurel Grove Fire and Rescue.
